Pink Floyd's success as one of the greatest progressive rock groups of all time is indebted to their former frontman, psychedelic singer/songwriter Syd Barrett. It was Barrett that led the group down the experimental path that produced their acclaimed debut The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, but after the record's release Barrett found himself shut out of the band due to increasingly erratic and unpredictable behavior, and questionable mental health.

In spite of this, Syd Barrett maintained enough record label support to record his own solo album separate from Pink Floyd. 1970's The Madcap Laughs was an album that took a turbulent year to record across multiple different producers, confused critics and audiences, and was one of many events that gradually caused Barrett to drift deeper into depression, and eventually abandon the music industry to live in seclusion.

On this particularly heavy episode of Jukebox Zeroes, Lilz & Patrick are joined by Pam & Jason Layne, co-hosts of WMFO's local music showcase On The Town With Mikey Dee, to listen to The Madcap Laughs, attempt to understand the enigma that was Syd Barrett, and discuss a particularly tragic footnote of rock history.
