Regardless of what's going on in your life, you should always have the desire to keep fighting, keep winning and keep building for tomorrow. Colin Gerner has achieved a lot...
show moreColin Gerner has achieved a lot in a short period of time since graduating with his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University at Albany School of Business. Reaching the level of success that he has at one of the “Big Four” firms is no easy feat for someone in their mid-twenties. But it’s the selfless work, both boots-on-the ground and philanthropic, that Gerner is doing in the nonprofit sector which truly sets him apart -- and provides hope to the millions of Americans affected by brain cancer.
Gerner serves as president and co-founder of StacheStrong, a nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness and critical funds for brain cancer research. The mission honors Gerner’s older brother and fellow UAlbany alum GJ, who in 2017 was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) and courageously fought the disease for 25 months before passing away in 2019. Gerner has spearheaded several fundraising initiatives through StacheStrong, including an annual 5K run/walk in all 50 states, a NYC Marathon team of 25 runners, the #LiveLikeGJ initiative and #BrewStacheStrong, a partnership between the organization and more than 200 breweries in 40+ states and Canada. Over 300,000 pints are brewed annually to support the nonprofit, with proceeds going towards brain cancer research. The organization holds its flagship fundraiser in New York City in the fall with hundreds of participants and sponsors. Since its founding in 2018, StacheStrong has raised over $2,000,000 and has funded 15 clinical trials/research grants. “In a few short years post-graduation, Colin has been remarkably successful while overcoming one of life’s toughest challenges,” said Don Boyce ’06, ’08, vice president of Regulatory Affairs at Fannie Mae.
Gerner is one of the most recognizable spokespeople within the GBM community. He has served as a panelist for major cancer and research conferences and has delivered several corporate keynote addresses within Pharma, Bio-Tech, Finance and similar sectors. Last year Gerner was interviewed by Megan McCain on ABC’s “The View” and the organization was most recently featured globally during the Olympics.
In between the daily StacheStrong commitments and his career at PwC, Gerner makes time to give back to his alma mater. He serves on the Student Affairs Advisory Board. He is heavily involved with the School of Business as an Accounting Advisory Board member and recently created an internship program that provides opportunities for students through StacheStrong. He also is a past member of the Alumni Association’s GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade) Committee.
