È una cosa che ho imparato alle scuole superiori. Ho fatto le scuole commerciali e, insieme alla stenografia, una delle materie del biennio era appunto la dattilografia. C'era questa stanza piena di gigantesche macchine da scrivere, pesantissime, con i pulsanti meccanici, e lì imparammo a scrivere appunto con un foglio di carta sulla tastiera che ci copriva le dita, e noi dovevamo copiare, pagina dopo pagina dopo pagina.

Sul momento sembrava un esercizio abbastanza stupido e inutile, però, ripeto, tra tutte le cose che ho imparato a scuola, la stenografia non si usa perché per stenografare bisogna scrivere parola per parola, mentre è più facile prendere nota facendo un riassunto o scrivendo solo le parole più importanti, però scrivere a macchina senza guardare è una dote veramente impagabile.

Poi, mentre ero a scuola, mi comprai, i miei genitori mi comprarono anche una piccola macchina da scrivere portatile, che purtroppo con gli anni poi non lo so più dove sia andata a finire.

Però le macchine da scrivere, proprio quelle meccaniche, quelle elettroniche no, più avanti me ne comprai anche una elettronica che addirittura, ricordo, all'epoca stavo in Germania, quindi aveva la tastiera tedesca, anche perché la usai per scrivere la mia tesi di laurea all'università, mi sono laureata in tedesco quindi aveva anche molte lettere tedesche, mi serviva necessariamente quella macchina da scrivere. All'epoca era ancora raro scrivere le tesi sui computer, quindi mi comprai questa macchina da scrivere elettronica, che addirittura tornava indietro e cancellava automaticamente, che era una cosa avveniristica.

Però le macchine da scrivere che più mi sono rimaste nel cuore sono invece quelle meccaniche e mi continua a piacere la macchina da scrivere con la sua tastiera, tanto che ho fatto, qualche tempo fa, la follia di comprarmi una tastiera per il computer che ricorda molto da vicino la tastiera di una macchina da scrivere, di quelle antiche, di quelle che usavo a scuola quando stavo imparando a battere a macchina. E infatti anche color verdolino, avete presente quel verdolino tipico delle macchine da scrivere? E i tasti sono, immagino, in qualche modo collegati al computer elettronicamente, anche perché uso il bluetooth, però sono tasti meccanici che fanno anche un sacco di rumore quando ci batto sopra. E non lo so, mi dà l'impressione di quasi sono una Hemingway che scrive sulla sua Remington.

Faccio una fatica incredibile a scrivere, perché bisogna anche un po' calcare, però ne vale la pena perché non lo so, è come il trillo di un uccellino attraverso la stanza quando scrivo a macchina sul mio computer.

At the time it seemed like a rather stupid and useless exercise, however, I repeat, among all the things I learned in school, shorthand is not that useful because to write in shorthand you have to write word for word, while it is easier to take notes by summarizing or writing only the most important words, but blind typing is a truly priceless skill.

Then, while attending school, I bought , my parents also bought me a small portable typewriter, which unfortunately I no longer know where it ended up over the years. But typewriters, the mechanical ones, not the electronic ones, later on I also bought an electronic one which, I remember, I was living in Germany at the time, so it had a German keyboard, also because I used it to write my dissertation university degree, I majored in German so it also had a lot of German letters, I needed that typewriter necessarily. At the time it was still rare to write thesis on computers, so I bought this electronic typewriter, which even went back and erased automatically, which was a futuristic feature.

But the typewriters that have remained in my heart the most are the mechanical ones and I still like typewriters with their keyboard, so much so that some time ago I did the folly of buying myself a keyboard for the computer that resembles very closely the keyboard of a typewriter, the old ones, the ones I used at school when I was learning to type. And in fact it is also greenish in color, do you know that greenish typical of typewriters? And the keys are, I imagine, somehow connected to the computer electronically, also because I use bluetooth, but they are mechanical keys that also make a lot of noise when I hit them.
