First established in 1971 , with large crowds gathering in parks to smoke marijuana and celebrities raising a joint to mark the occasion. The cannabis celebration day is now becoming more mainstream and commercial, as more people and businesses try and cash in on the industry. Recreational marijuana is legal in 18 states, Washington, D.C., and Guam. On Election Day in 2012, voters in Colorado approved a ballot initiative legalizing the recreational use and sale of cannabis, making it first in the U.S. to do so. 18 states, D.C., & Guam and legalize the drug in the next nine years as public support for legalization rose rapidly – About 66% of Americans favor the legalization of marijuana in the US. Law enforcers are more likely to arrest Black Americans than White Americans.Marijuana arrests account for 43% of all drug arrests in the US.The US makes 600,000 marijuana arrests on average every year.Law enforcers arrest approximately two individuals per minute for drug possession.The US spends $3.6 billion on marijuana arrests every year.A marijuana conviction can cost the felon from $2,000 to $20,000 in defense. “You have 2.3 million of our fellow Americans behind bars Many are there for nonviolent drug crimes including possession of marijuana at a time that more than half the states have legalized or decriminalized it.”Beto O’Rourke
