Over the weekend, social media lit up on speculation that PayPal was considering fining users $2,500 over misinformation. Shares of PayPal (PYPL) crashed Monday about 6%, dipping into the September lows. PayPal quickly apologized over the weekend for what it called “confusion,” claiming it was all just an error, but not before a a deluge of criticism from a number of high-profile individuals—including its own former president, David Marcus. This was also terrible timing as it coincides with a week of massive earnings calls for several major companies, which may turn out to be quite grim.
