show moreThe bands 2021 single Hindsight provided the impetus for a successful assault on the local music scene, opening The Last Martyr up to an expansive fan base that devours each release as it comes out.
The resulting EP Purgatory catapulted The Last Martyr into the spotlight, securing them a number of high profile tours which the band took in their stride and used as a further launchpad to success.
With the recent release of what vocalist Monica Strut proudly labels the band’s heaviest song to date titled Sugar, The Last Martyr are preparing for their next phase of acceptance with more high profile shows to come, including their own single launch, and a number of showcase gigs at next weeks BigSound in Brisbane.
Strut took time out from an increasingly hectic schedule to talk to HEAVY about the whirlwind past 12 months of the band, starting with new single Sugar.
"It's the track that I have done the most amount of screaming on so far,” she smiled, “so it was a little bit nerve wracking to write. We debuted it when we recently supported Black Veil Brides so that was a bit of a road test to see how people were going to respond to a song with 50% screams because we haven't done that before. But it is really, really fun. That came out two weeks ago now and we've been riding the wave and seeing how it's been received ever since."
In the full interview, Monica talks more about the schizophrenic nature of Sugar, finding the balance between aggression and beauty in music, their success on the back of Purgatory and why she thinks people connected with it, pushing yourself in new directions rather than follow an existing path, having their song played on Friday Night Football, BigSound, the single launch and more.
