Porter, who had the title role in the John Hughes' 1991 movie Curly Sue, had left the lights and stage of Hollywood and Broadway years before her Voice audition to spend time with family. The former actress shared her story about drug addiction and how she has been sober for eight years.
The mother of two and stepmom to one bonded almost immediately with Aguilera during the blind auditions. The Voice coach was in tears as Porter told her story of being a mom trying to see if she could have a second chance as a performer.
On Tuesday night, Porter beat contestants representing each of the other coaches on the show: Pharrell Williams' Nebraska pre-school teacher Hannah Huston, Adam Levine's Michigan musican Laith Al-Saadi and Blake Shelton's country crooner Adam Wakefield.
And before the series finale, the four had to perform live Monday to gain viewers' votes. And on that show, they all had to perform one cover "pick" and also an original song that they wrote.
Porter's first performance of that night was her original song first: “Down That Road.” But it was her second turn on stage, the closing number for Monday's show, that left a powerful impression with the judges, the live theater audience and fans on Twitter.
Porter sang “Somewhere” from Broadway's West Side Story and nailed the performance:
