Today's topic: Aretha Franklin - You're All I Need To Get By. There are several notable cover versions of the song.
Johnny Mathis and Denise Williams, Tony Orlando and Dawn, and some others have cover versions of the song You're All I Need To Get By. It was originally recorded by R&B soul duo Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell and released on Motown records Tamia label in 1968.
The song was written by Nicholas Ashford and Valerie Simpson. It became one of the few Motown recordings of the 1960s that was not recorded with the familiar Motown sound. Instead the song had a more soulful and gospel oriented theme surrounding it that was influenced by the writers who also sing background vocals on the recording sharing vocals in a church choir in New York City.
You're All I Need To Get By was a great song for Aretha Franklin to sing, and she recorded the song as a single in 1971. The song was also included on her compilation album Aretha's Greatest Hits release later the same year. Her version peaked at number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number three on the Hot Soul Singles chart. It also features in a 2020 holiday advertisement for Walmart.
Most people love the original version of You're All I Need To Get By. Aretha knew how to sing her version without leaving the original way of singing it, but still singing it her way. Her version is loved too, and already the song had a gospel sound, and Aretha was also known for singing gospel. The song was just right for Aretha Franklin.
