In 2017, Demetria relocated from Virginia to Atlanta, eager for a promising job opportunity after years as a middle school teacher. However, the job proved to be a toxic environment, prompting her to resign and pivot towards entrepreneurship. Drawing from her family's legacy of creativity and a newfound passion for candle making, she launched Candles 4 the Culture in 2019. Candles 4 the Culture embodies values of authenticity, community, and quality craftsmanship. The products not only enhance physical spaces but also nurture emotional well-being, reflecting the pride, self-worth, and nostalgia of Black American experiences. Since its inception, Candles 4 the Culture has grown from an online presence to opening a Brick and Mortar location in Atlanta during the pandemic, expanding its collections and gaining recognition in programs like Beygood and Goldman Sachs' One Million Black Women: Black in Business.
