Episode Nine 1980-1990
"A Great Party with a Terrible Hangover"
In Chapter Nine we are joined by Douglas Beattie, well known Celtic author of "Happy Birthday Dear Celtic". We cover the period 1980 to 1990 when the Club enjoys a roller coaster ride of great successes and tragic failures. Relive the excitement of the decade on and off the field as we start with a Cup final victory against Rangers and end with another. The Hampden "riot" game and the Joe Miller Cup final nicely book-end ten years of romance for the Glasgow club.
Who can forget the epic European games against Real Madrid, Ajax and Rapid Vienna while the club fight hard domestically to keep up with the upcoming "New Firm" of Aberdeen and Dundee United. Towards the end of the decade Scottish Football sees dramatic changes as Rangers finally get their act together and challenge everyone with their new regime but even they were unable to stop the Glory, Glory Bhoys from winning a double in their Centenary Year.
We have Tales from the Wiki, the History of the Stadium, the History of the Celtic Shirt, eyewitness accounts from Anton Rogan, George McCluskey and Frank McAvennie as well as all your Fan Stories and Confessions. Paul Cuddihy also joins us with the history of the Celtic View and we pay homage to Tommy Burns who “Played for a People and a Cause”
As our Ninth guest, Douglas nominates The Kano Foundation as the nominated charity and you can learn more about them at http://www.thekanofoundation.com/index.php
We are asking everyone that downloads the podcast to donate one pound, fifty pence or even a fiver for the episode, but really anything you can afford will be greatly appreciated and ALL monies raised will be given to the ten worthy charities at the end of the series.
