show moreAt the time, the officials thought they fairly distributed water rights among constituents, which would have been true if the math were correct. But the numbers were terribly off, and the states are now drawing more acre-feet of water than the River can reasonably sustain. Water continues to be used frivolously even though we know that there is not nearly enough water for this level of consumption. If something doesn't change soon, there might actually be no water to go around.
