show moreDiffusione Fiaba celebrated "Diwali", the Indian Festival of Lights, which took place on 12 November! Diwali can be considered like the Indu New Year, marking the victory of good over evil, through the return home (Ayodhya) of Lord Rama - the Hindu God Vishnu in human form - his wife Goddess Sita and his brother Lakshmana after 14-year exile upon the defeat of their rival Ravana, the king of Lanka.
For Diwali celebration, Elena Asciutti welcomed and interviewed the Indian storytellers: Vinita Bhatnagar and Shreya Biswas. Both talked about oral traditions and storytelling practice in India, while sharing two traditional stories related to Diwali.
Stories:
- "Shining fish", told and freely translated from Italian into English by Elena Asciutti, Italian fairy tale transcripted by Italo Calvino in his anthology Italian Folktales (#118, Abbruzzo region) (7'30'')
- "Ram Katha: the call of destiny", from the Indian epic Ramayana, told by Vinita Bhatnagar (41')
- "Darkness to light", a folktale from Tamil Nadu, told by Shreya Biswas (1h24'')
