Drunk Graduate School Student Hits and Kills Bicyclist


A tragic DUI case unfolds as a highly intoxicated graduate school student fatally strikes a bicyclist. This case serves as a chilling reminder of the devastating consequences of drunk driving

On February 29, 2024, Las Cruces police officers responded to East Lohman Avenue and Interstate 25 regarding an auto verses bicyclist traffic collision. The first officers on scene were directed to the bicyclist who was struck by the vehicle and flew over a wall and down an embankment.

Witnesses indicated the 27-year-old driver of the Ford Mustang was speeding through a yellow light, lost control of her vehicle, and drove up on the curb, striking the bicyclist. Officer Ramirez met with the driver of the Ford Mustang, who initially denied consuming any alcohol.

A Sergeant on scene directed officers to conduct field sobriety tests (FSTs) in order to rule out intoxication as a cause of the accident. The woman performed poorly on the FSTs and was arrested for Driving While Under the Influence and Reckless Driving. At the police station, she submitted to an evidential breath test and the result was 0.12% BAC. 

On March 2, 2024, the bicyclist died from his injuries and the charge of Homicide by Vehicle was added.
