Drunk Woman Crashes in Front of Cops Before DUI Arrest

Around 12:31 AM on April 2, 2022, Patrolman Scott Finch with the Easton Police Department responded to the area of 14 N Washington Street in reference to a motor vehicle collision involving a 2005 Chevy Malibu and a 2015 Honda Accord. After he arrived on scene, he was speaking with the parties involved in this accident as he observed the driver of a 2012 Nissan Juke driving in reverse after exiting a parking spot. After the driver exited the parking spot, the Chevy Malibu was struck again by her vehicle on the right rear side. After the second collision was witnessed by the officers on scene, Patrolman Finch made contact with the driver of the Juke. The driver was identified as Megan, and Patrolman Finch detected the odor of alcohol and observed other indicators of impairment as he was speaking with her.
Officer Andrea Kendall spoke with Megan as he returned to start the vehicle information exchange report. Megan was able to provide the officer with registration but she was fumbling over her documents and unable to provide proof of insurance. When Officer Kendall asked her how much she had to drink, Megan admitted to consuming 1 drink earlier that evening. Based on the officers’ suspicion of impairment, it was decided that Megan would be transported to the Easton Police Department so that they could administer field sobriety exercises inside their sally port.
After they arrived at the Easton Police Department, Patrolman Finch administered the field sobriety exercises as Sergeant Jason Dyott assisted. Patrolman Finch started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, and he observed the lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test. During the Walk and Turn test, Megan did not touch heel-to-toe on each step, turned improperly, and raised her arms from her side to keep her balance while performing the test. The final exercise was the One Leg Stand test, and Megan failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion while placing her foot down before the test was complete.
Based on the motor vehicle accident, the odor of alcohol, her admission to consuming alcohol, and her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, Megan was informed that she would be placed under arrest for driving under the influence. Patrolman Finch transported Megan to the Maryland State Police barrack in Easton, Maryland where she was asked submit breath samples. Megan agreed to submit breath samples and Corporal Jean Davenport operated the Intoximeter machine. Megan’s results indicated a BAC level of 0.10 g/210L of breath, which was over the legal limit.
After submitting breath samples at the Maryland State Police barrack in Easton, Megan was transported back to the Easton Police Department. Megan was cited for driving while under the influence of alcohol, driving while under the influence of alcohol per se, negligent driving, driving while impaired by alcohol, and unsafe backing. Patrolman Finch handed Megan her tickets and released her pending her court appearance.
