show moreCathay Williams / William Cathay was the only documented female Buffalo Soldier. She pretended to be a man and served 2 years before her secret came to light. She was sent far away and medically discharged so know one would know (until years later when she applied for Army disability). Buffalo Soldiers served at a variety of posts in the Southwest and Great Plains, taking part in most of the military campaigns during the decades-long Indian Wars –– during which they compiled a distinguished record, with 18 Buffalo Soldiers awarded the Medal of Honor. Texas is the only state in the U.S. with a statewide Texas Buffalo Soldier Program and it is the only cultural program of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Division.
