In June 2009, an Amish woman named Barbara Weaver was found shot to death in her Ohio home, shocking her conservative community where homicides were exceptionally rare. Investigators soon uncovered that her husband, Eli Weaver, had maintained multiple online affairs and conspired with his mistress, Barbara Raber, to orchestrate the killing to avoid the religious social penalties of a conventional divorce. While Eli plotted the crime and arranged an alibi by going fishing, Raber ultimately carried out the fatal shooting inside the victim's residence. Following the murder, Eli confessed and cooperated with authorities in exchange for a lighter sentence, leading to Raber receiving a lengthy prison term of 23 years to life for her role in the conspiracy.
