In about 1745 George Washington wrote out more than a hundred Rules of Civility and Decent Behaviour in Company and Conversation as a school exercise. He did not compose these rules. Their source was from a French Text compiled by Jesuits in the late 16th century, intended for a world in which heirarchy and manners were immeasurably important. The books were referred to as Courtesy books and they spelled out behaviour and rules.
