Her name is Jessica Mills, but in the hiking world people call her ‘Dixie’. Although she was born in Florida, she ‘grew up’ in Opelika, AL. Dixie spent the majority of her summers with her grandparents who were backyard gardeners that grew up on farms. At a young age, she developed a love for the outdoors. Watching TV is never a desire of hers, unless it is football season–War Eagle! She graduated from Auburn University in 2012 with a degree in Biosystems Engineering and a minor in Agronomy and Soils.

For a year and a half, she was a resident of Colorado. She resigned from her job there and began her thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail in March 2015. Although that journey ended in October 2015 when she summited Mt. Katahdin, it was only the beginning to a new chapter of her life. In 2017, Dixie hiked the Pacific Crest Trail. In 2018, the Continental Divide Trail. In 2019, Camino De Santiago. In 2020, the Pinhoti Trail. And in 2021, the Florida Trail!

Dixie is an advocate of being outdoors and feels as if we can learn a lot about ourselves and life in general while out in nature. Whether it’s taking an evening stroll, catching lightning bugs or gardening, she thinks everyone can benefit from smelling the roses now and then!
