Colombia has many beautiful, off-the-beaten-track places to visit. Some of these, however, are in areas largely controlled by non-state authorities, bandit country if you will.
While the number of such zones appears to be decreasing, the Darién Gap, a human trafficking and drug smuggling hotspot spanning the Colombia-Panama border, is still notorious in this regard. Attempting to trek through it overland is an extremely risky pursuit, as young Swedish adventurer Jan Philip Braunisch was to fatally find out in 2013. NGO worker and journalist Steve Hide was involved in the recovery of Jan Philip's body from the Farc guerrillas who murdered him. Here Steve gives us the background to this tragic story.
