Dr. Vivien Sieber is a biologist who trained in plant genetics. After ten years of biomedical research, she began lecturing in Genetics. Her interests moved into academic development, learning technology and information literacy. During her career Vivien worked in a range of UK universities. Although Vivien has published many peer-reviewed journal articles on her research, Kino and Kinder is her first book. CV 2010 - 2014 Head of Learning & Research Support and Development; Deputy Director Library & Learning Support Services, University of Surrey 2003 - 2010 Head Medical Sciences Division Learning Technologies, University of Oxford 2001 - 2003 Academic Leader and Manager: Teaching and Learning Technology Centre, Centre for Academic & Professional Development, London Metropolitan University 1993 - 2000 Senior Lecturer in Genetics, Department of Life Sciences, University of East London 1991 - 1992 Senior Research Fellow, Basic Medical Sciences, Queen Mary University of London 1984 - 1990 Doctoral Researcher, University of Oxford 1981 - 1983 Research Associate, University of Manchester/SERC Daresbury Laboratory 1980 Clinical Cytogeneticist, Sutton and West Merton AHA 1975 - 1980 Botany Technician, Westfield College, University of London Kino and Kinder: A family’s journey in the shadow of the Holocaust Vivien inherited a collection of letters, journals and family photographs from her father, Peter, along with the responses to his 1999 survey of the Kinder transport girls (as mature women) cared for by her grandmother in the hostel. Paula was one of the matrons and kept in touch with many of the girls through out her life. Vivien was privileged to meet some of these women who generously shared their memories. They talked about leaving their families as young children, their time in the hostel and later lives. Many of their words are included in Kino and Kinder. During a visit to Vienna (2019) Vivien visited the flat her grandmother was forced to leave in 1938, This began a quest to discover what had happened to family who had not escaped and the cinema. Using papers from the Austrian state and city archives and historical databases, Vivien reconstructed events during and after the war (1938 – 1952). Information from the archives corroborated correspondence between her father and grandmother. Peter left a contemporaneous journal that recorded his internment in the Isle of Man and Canada which gives a unique insight into the experience. He also left unpublished manuscripts with compelling details of the rise of antisemitism in Vienna in the 1930s, and his time in the Royal Navy and naval intelligence. Although Vivien has no formal training in historical methodologies, her career was spent in academia. She is very experienced working with information: finding, evaluating and verifying sources. Visits to Brno, Vienna and Windermere helped her to write Kino and Kinder. Vivien used these rich historical resources as a scaffold to build and tell the history of a twentieth century Jewish family and the Holocaust. As the daughter and grand daughter of survivors, she is in a unique position to tell their story.
