Description
Susan Faith Brady was born in Wenatchee WA and has moved all over eastern washington. Working as wildland firefighter during her time as an undergrad student brought her great joy...
show moreShe completed her undergraduate and graduate degrees at Central Washington University, both degrees being in Biology. Interestingly, her graduate studies were in frog egg fungus among other things. She spent time utilizing her schooling to radio track frogs allowing her to enjoy her love of research science.
She managed to hop on a National Science Foundation Education grant, helping her infuse real scientists and science into classrooms. She adored working with the children in the classroom and I loved how kids, of all ages, are natural scientists.
With the surprising news of a little one of her own in the way her and her husband decided to move which ended her grant. So, she started Buckwheat Bottoms in her garage when her son was just 4 months old and it exploded! Even though at times she felt like she had no idea what she was doing in the beginning stages, she did know that she just loved selling diapers and more than anything she loved that her tiny little garage became this magical space where strangers showed up and became dear friends. Some days during "evening hours" the little 10x12 foot room would be packed with people, all of which laughing and enjoying each others company. Growing her business is where she holds her most bitter sweet memories. It took them from the innocent quiet garage store into a thriving business in downtown Richland! During this time her and her business grew a LOT but what continued was her love for her deep interactions and connections.
By some amazing chance in 2015, a lactation consultant (who would become her mentor) walked into Buckwheat Bottoms, freshly retired, and wanting to donate some flexible lactation consulting time to the community.
An amazing friendship blossomed between the two of them and Susan discovered that this breastfeeding help thing was seriously perfect for her.
And so, last year she sold Buckwheat Bottoms. With such a strong tie to her store she grieved for the ending of this chapter in life. Not the small business stress/excitement, or the job, or any of that...it was the connections with the people.
Which brings us to today. She is a mom to two beautiful kids. And a breastfeeding educator, who is always looking for more ways to bring families together, especially women and new moms. Because life can feel so lonely. And when we find connection, it gets a little bit easier.
