This episode is focused on teaching families the difference between Doing/Enabling vs Helping/Supporting. The conversation highlights how Doing/Enabling without permission is counterproductive to the patient’s recovery process. We also discuss ways in which helping and supporting loved ones can be conducive and beneficial to not just their recovery but aiding in restoring the broken familial relationships impacted by the disease of addiction.

Alaina is currently employed at the Robert Alexander Center for Recovery in Mount Washington, KY as the family therapist. She is a licensed professional counselor associate and is currently attending Lindsey Wilson College to obtain her PhD in counselor education and supervision. Her primary focus is educating people on addiction and the value of treating addiction from a family perspective. Lainie's areas of expertise are treating and understanding co-occurring disorders focusing primarily in substance use disorder and family dynamics. In the last year and a half Lainie has accomplished building a family program at the Robert Alexander Center for Recovery which includes a weekly group, and a family retreat focusing on increasing awareness of the family dynamics and how to find freedom from the chains of addiction.
