In front of a roaring crowd of 68,455, Atlanta United pulled off a stunning upset, edging out Inter Miami 2-1 in extra time to force a decisive Game 3 in their MLS playoff series. Fans packed the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, making it the fifth-largest postseason crowd in league history, and they were treated to a thrilling underdog win. Inter Miami, the season’s record-breaking top seed, now faces elimination after a nail-biting loss that saw Atlanta come alive in the closing minutes.
The game-winning goal came from Atlanta’s Xande Silva, who scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time, sending the stadium into a frenzy. Interim coach Rob Valentine, leading Atlanta after they squeezed into the playoffs as a wild card, said, “It was everything I dreamed it would be, an unbelievable moment.”
Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender was understandably disappointed, saying, “It stings anytime you lose a game in stoppage time. We had a good opportunity to take it in two games, but now our focus is on Game 3 at home.”
Despite the loss, Miami’s coach Tata Martino remains confident, noting, “We have the advantage of many high-caliber players who have been through more difficult situations. I am satisfied with how they played, but frustrated with the result.” Martino pointed out that while Miami dominated possession and played aggressively, Atlanta capitalized on their few chances, including Derrick Williams’ equalizing header in the 58th minute.
Lionel Messi struggled to make an impact as Inter Miami fell to a 2-1 defeat against Atlanta United in the first round of the MLS Playoffs at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday, November 2. The Herons came into this match after a recent victory against the same team, but they couldn’t carry that momentum forward.
One fan called the team a “garbage low IQ team,” while another quipped about Messi’s performance, asking, “Where Messi?”
The defeat ties the best-of-three series at 1-1, with the final game set for Saturday, November 10, at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.
