Nigeria's First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, recently unveiled her vegetable garden which she planted to encourage first-time women farmers to join the ongoing ‘Every Home A Garden Competition.’ The vegetables she unveiled include a variety of crops such as spinach, water leaf, bitter leaf, Ewedu, lemon grass, scent leaf and Okro,.

Speaking at the event, she emphasized that the aim is to empower women and households across Nigeria to take up gardening as a means of achieving food security and self-sufficiency.

In the face of escalating food prices and soaring inflation rates across Nigeria, the importance of achieving food security has never been more pressing.

So, the question is: How many Nigerians are willing to answer the clarion call to cultivate diverse food items such as okra, tomatoes, spinach, and peppers in their homes? Do they understand the concept of vegetable gardening, and how committed are they to investing their time and resources to contribute to their family's food security?

Here, we look into the benefits of home gardening, its challenges, and the role everyone can play to support in ensuring the success of initiatives like the 'Every Home a Garden' in Nigeria.
