It is with a heavy heart and a sense of urgency that we write to you today regarding the ongoing crisis within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ). Inmates in the custody of TDCJ are dying at an alarming rate, and Governor Greg Abbott is turning a blind eye to their suffering.
Advocate Angela Thomas Smith has reported a significant increase in calls and letters from inmates across TDCJ, both male and female, detailing the horrific conditions they are facing. These inmates have no connection to each other, so there can be no doubt that their accounts are genuine and not part of some conspiracy.
The corruption within TDCJ has been allowed to fester for years, and the inmates are fed up. They are speaking out against the injustices they are facing every day, and it is time for Texas to be held accountable for the lives they have ruined and the current state of their prison system.
It is clear that TDCJ is in violation of the 8th Amendment, which prohibits cruel and unusual punishment. We are calling for the reopening of the landmark case of Ruiz vs. Estelle from 1981, which exposed the horrific conditions within Texas prisons.
