Story Transcript:

En: The sun was warm over the farm, and the air pressed down on everything like a brick.

Af: Die veld was droog en stowwerig.
En: The field was dry and dusty.

En: Summer had sunk its claws deep into the earth.

Af: Anika het uitgekyk oor haar familieland.
En: Anika looked out over her family land.

En: She saw how the plants desperately craved moisture.

En: The drought predicted a shortage of everything, especially with Christmas around the corner.

En: Anika had already decided to save the last of the water for the most important crops.

En: With every drop, she prayed that the sky would be merciful.

En: Her brother, Johan, often frowned, worried about the future and their finances.

En: He frequently reached for the calculator, trying to find a way to keep them afloat.

En: "We've had this farm for three generations now. I can't lose it," Anika said one evening, as she and Johan sat on the porch.

En: "We'll find a way," Johan said. He put his arm around her, seeking courage in his own words.

Af: Net langsaan was Lize se plaas.
En: Right next door was Lize's farm.

Af: Sy was altyd besig, altyd glimlaggend.
En: She was always busy, always smiling.

En: You wouldn't say the drought affected her too.

En: She often popped over for a visit, regularly bringing a freshly baked loaf of bread or a basket full of fruit whenever she could.

En: "Don't lose hope," Lize told Anika one day as they sat under the shade of an old oak tree.

Af: "Ek hoor daar is reën op pad. Groot reën."
En: "I hear there's rain on the way. Big rain."

En: She wanted to hope, but the weather can be unpredictable.

En: By Christmas, a dark cloud began to form on the horizon.

En: It was a good sign, but also a sign of uncertainty.

Af: Anika het by haarself gewonder of sy die water moet gebruik of wag vir die buitelyn van die wolke om hul belofte te hou.
En: Anika wondered to herself whether she should use the water or wait for the outline of the clouds to keep their promise.

En: "It's a chance we have to take," Johan said.

En: His eyes followed the clouds, deep in thought.

En: Then, right before Christmas Day, the storm truly broke loose.

En: The rain poured down over the farm and washed away the drought.

En: The streams of water raced over the dry ground, each drop bringing life back.

Af: Kersdag was helder en vreugdevol.
En: Christmas Day was bright and joyful.

En: Anika and Johan shared their mutual gratitude over a simple, yet meaningful meal with Lize.

En: The farm was not only saved, but they also remembered how important it is to support one another.

En: Anika now understood that she could trust her community.

En: She could also let go of the idea that she had to control everything herself.

En: The life-changing rain brought more than just water; it brought hope and a new beginning.

Af: En die stilte na die reën? Dit was die mooiste geskenk van almal.
En: And the silence after the rain? It was the most beautiful gift of all.
