Softball is one of the most popular American sports. It has a long history dating back to the late 19th century and since its inception, the sport has become one of the most widely played throughout the U.S. Although softball is generally associated exclusively with female players, in recent years it has become popular among men as well as coed teams as well.
One of the major reasons why softball has been surging in popularity throughout America is simply that it is a healthy sport that requires a lot of physical activity. Whether holding a softball bat as a batter, pitching as a pitcher or as a fielder, a softball player has to do a lot of physical exertion, not to mention the training she has to undergo.
So the sport is a great way for softball players of all ages to remain active, healthy, and strong. This is especially true for girls and women who find softball as an excellent way of keeping a robust lifestyle. And it is precisely for this reason that softball remains a highly preferred sport for women of all ages.
Apart from being social, softball also teaches teamwork. What is teamwork on the field during a softball game becomes your most important resource later in your life when you have to professionally lead a team or be a part of a team through different situations. Teamwork means being able to be a valuable part of a team and lend as great a part to its success as you can.
The 2022 Little League Softball World Series was ESPN’s most-watched since it expanded coverage of the tournament in 2017, according to Nielsen. It averaged 294,000 viewers across ESPN and ESPN2, up 19 percent from last year and up 21 percent from 2019. The increases occurred despite losing the primetime Little League Softball World Series Championship Game window due to inclement weather.
ESPN’s Little League Softball World Series coverage is also experiencing double-digit year-over-year viewership gains in key demos, including a 74 percent increase among teenagers and a 30 percent year increase among women.
The Little League Softball World Series Semifinal Game on August 14 between Hewitt, Texas, and Chesterfield, Virginia was the tournament’s most-watched telecast since 2018. It averaged 537,000 viewers.
Needless to say, softball is a sport with a long and storied history that makes it totally unique. Although it's often seen as a quintessentially American game, it is also eagerly played in the most far-flung places of the globe. Some of the best and most active nations include New Zealand, Australia, Canada, China, Japan, and of course, the United States.
Due to the greater interest, these countries have perhaps unsurprisingly produced some of the most talented players in the world thanks to their high-level coaching and superior facilities. Besides this, these countries have competitive softball leagues that allow players to compete at a high level regularly. Because of this, these countries are always among the top contenders at international tournaments.
These aforementioned professional leagues and organizations which are known as the National Pro Fastpitch and the World Baseball Softball Confederation have completely transformed the world's opinion of the sport. In essence, as the sport continues to grow and these leagues go from strength to strength, is expected that even more countries will begin to embrace softball as their national pastime which will mean greater participation in the World Cups to come and not just the 16 teams that compete in the current format.
