show moreIn an era where bands are forced into neat genre specific packages and titles, Gutterfire! have refused to be drawn in, allowing for a creative musical freedom unrestrained by labels and expectations.
Self-coined as ‘upbeat doom’, Gutterfire! draw from a well that includes rock, hard rock, punk, metal and almost anything else they feel like sprinkling into the mix and churn out an eclectic, vibrant sound that is only accentuated in the live arena.
After spending the last couple of years introducing fans to their music, the band has now released their debut album Chill, with band members Jon, Az and Clayton all joining HEAVY to talk about the new album.
"It has that Sabbath vibe, and Queens Of The Stone Age we all love and we all love Led Zeppelin and Kyuss...,” Jon began. “We also all come from different musical backgrounds and we're quite different people so some of us like Faith No More, some of us like Deftones, some of us like the more metal side of things and pulling all those things together with that through line of the common interests lets us jump off all these places while still making it sound cohesive as an album.”
"With the album - we all write in the band - so we all bring in quite different vibes when we bring in our songs,” Az continued. “We do have a good recipe where we bounce off each other. There will be a main songwriter usually, and Jon does all the lyrics and then it kind of builds. We had some ideas that were fleshed out on the album, so we've been writing for it for a number of years."
In the full interview the boys talk more about the album and it's musical make-up, the thinking going into a debut album song-wise, how much fun the album was to make, their new work already in progress, their eclectic sound and where it comes from, upcoming live shows and more.
