This episode is a keynote address delivered by former ANROWS board director, Professor Victoria Hovane, from The Australian National University, and Doctor Mark Wenitong, from Apunipima Cape York Health Council. In their address, Vickie and Mark discuss intergenerational trauma, and the effects this trauma has in terms of health, health system responses, and family violence in Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander communities. Their keynote followed the Warawarni-gu Guma (Healing Together) Statement from the 2nd National Research Conference on Violence against Women, held in Sydney in May, 2018, and is referred to in their address. Vickie provides a conceptual framework for understanding intergenerational trauma and responses to family violence in Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander communities, and what that looks like in policy. Mark explains how intergeneration trauma is seen and worked with in practice, and encouraging examples of trauma-based work in ending violence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
