If there is one undeniable truth in the brutal, beautiful world of heavy music, it is that complacency is a killer. The moment a band thinks they have the game entirely figured out is precisely when the universe steps in to deliver a ferocious reality check. Nobody understands this balancing act of chaos and raw artistic instinct quite like Melbourne hard-rock outfit Ion Sky. Just when they were preparing to head into Pony Studios to track drums for the new album songs - firmly agreeing that the creative taps were turned off and no more songs would be allowed on the ledger—vocalist Mike Joseph threw a massive spanner in the works.
It started with an urgent, fired-up phone call to guitarist Jake James. Armed with little more than a searing opening line, a heavy, droning melody, and a frantic voice memo, Joseph essentially demanded they make room for one more. Within hours, a demo was built, the band was convinced to squeeze it into the session, and that eleventh-hour burst of sonic lightning has now manifested as their thunderous new single, The Dirt Will Humble You. Serving as the blistering opening salvo for next years highly anticipated upcoming album, Before We Die, the track isn’t just a regular release; it is a total declaration of intent that lays the gauntlet down with staggering ferocity.
What makes this track stand out in an already thriving Australian rock scene is the sheer, unapologetic weight behind its subject matter. It fuses their signature classic metal and post-grunge hybrid style with hooks that refuse to leave your head and a primal energy that captures the electrifying live presence the band has spent years perfecting. It is heavy, it is melodic, and it goes harder than anything they have put to tape so far.
HEAVY Magazine sat down with the ever-passionate frontman Mike Joseph to get the lowdown on the chaotic birth of this track, the madness of rewriting album structures at the absolute last minute, how a random voice memo turned into the band’s definitive favorite live anthem and more. Crack a cold one, crank the volume, and find out how Ion Sky are continuing to keep the spirit of dirty, uncompromising Australian rock alive and kicking.
