Is Money Truly the Root of All Evil?

How often have you heard someone say, “Money is the root of all evil” and point to the Bible as the source for their assertion?

But does the Bible say, “Money is the root of all evil?” No, the Bible does not say that.

What does the Bible say about money?

Let’s explore that question in this episode of, Bible Verses for Better Living.

The way this podcast works is I share a reading from Scripture, offer brief commentary about how you and I can incorporate God’s message from that Scripture in our daily lives, and then I again share that same reading.

But the second time I ask you to really feel God’s Word. Not just understand the reading academically, but to really feel the energy of God’s work and let it resonate through your entire mind, body, and spirit.

I then ask you to consider how you can apply the reading from Scripture in your own life.

What does the Bible say about the relationship between money and evil.

In 1 Timothy 6, Verse 10, King James Version, we’re told,

“The love of money is the root of all evil.”

It is not money itself that is evil. It’s the LOVE of money that corrupts. It is a mindset of Avarice.

But wait, Steve! In Matthew 19, Verse 24, didn’t Jesus say,

“Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to get through a needle’s eye than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God.”?

Let’s look closer. In Verses 25 and 26, we’re told:

“When the disciples heard that, they were greatly astounded, saying: “Who really can be saved?” 26  Looking at them intently, Jesus said to them: “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.

Notice Jesus did not say, “It is impossible for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God. Why? Because with God, all things are possible.

Recall it is the LOVE of money that is the root of evil.

According to Dictionary.com Avarice is defined as, “Insatiable greed for riches; inordinate, miserly desire to gain and hoard wealth.”

Let me re-read this definition and as I do that, tune into how the words feel to you:

, “Insatiable greed for riches; inordinate, miserly desire to gain and hoard wealth.”

As I say the words, I feel sick to my stomach. The words create a feeling of repulsion.

“Insatiable greed for riches; inordinate, miserly desire to gain and hoard wealth.”

Notice it is not wealth itself that creates feelings of repulsion. It is the greed, the miserly desire to gain and hoard wealth that creates the repulsion.

In Proverbs 11, Verse 25, we’re told,

“The generous person will prosper, and whoever refreshes others will himself be refreshed.”

When you put money in it’s proper place, there is no conflict with Biblical principles. Money, wealth, possessions all can be used for the benefit of others.

Are we not asked to tithe from our income to support God’s work?

Are we not asked to make additional offerings in accordance with our wealth?

Isn’t it obvious the greater our income, the greater our wealth, the more we can contribute to support our places of worship and work done in the name of God?

When you worship God and live by God’s Word, you can easily keep avarice at arms’ length. You can know in your mind, heart, and soul, the true purpose of money and use wealth to do God’s work and help others, all in accordance with Biblical guidance.

Let’s return to 1 Timothy 6, Verse 10. As I again share this short reading, I invite you to really feel the truth, feel the wisdom of God’s Word in your body, mind, and soul.

“The love of money is the root of all evil.”

Are you worshipping money or are using money to provide the necessities of life for you and yourself, and then putting excess money to work for the good of others and to promote the glory of God?

How can you put money or stored wealth to better use in alignment with Biblical teaching?

I encourage you to pray on these questions and listen to - and act on - God's guidance.
