show moreJan Peter de Jong is a Dutch researcher who lived in Peru for 13 years, and over the years made a number of fascinating discoveries in and around Cusco. In his investigations, he discovered the use of an unknown science and technology in the cutting or carving of granite rock. The stone blocks, (pictured) – appear to have been treated with some form of high heat which has shaped the stone in a manner that is completely baffling to our current understanding.
De Jong is an expert at revealing what he terms the vitrification, or heating and molding of these stones, and has discovered structures throughout Peru which were treated with this process. Vitrification occurs as a result of exposing stone to extreme heat. The process has been found at several ancient sites around the world. In most examples the stone appears to have been subjected to extreme heats (over 1000°C), causing the rocks to melt and leaving a shiny almost polished texture to the surface, and smooth to the touch.
