show morePerhaps for this reason, the United Nations, in marking this year’s International Day for Persons with Disabilities, which took place yesterday, December 3rd, centered its theme on the need to amplify the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future.
The theme underscores the importance of leveraging the leadership of persons with disabilities to ensure disability-inclusive and sustainable peace and development for all.
In Nigeria, while legislative provisions such as the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act have been made to recognize PWDs as key members of society, field reports indicate that implementation has been inconsistent and inadequate. This reality poses significant barriers to PWDs reaching their full potential and ultimately occupying leadership positions that could guarantee their inclusion and empowerment.
Here, we make a case for the inclusion of PWDs in leadership and decision-making processes. But how can we achieve this? What are the challenges preventing their inclusion, and what steps can we take to overcome them.
