Good morning, this is Local Pulse for Saturday, November 23, 2024.

We're starting off with some breaking news from the past few days. A New York City Police officer and a bystander were both shot in the leg in Queens on Tuesday evening, with the suspect being shot and killed. This incident highlights the ongoing need for public safety measures in our city.

In other news, the 2024 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is just around the corner, and this year's fleet of floats brings old favorites along with some new designs. If you're planning to attend, make sure to check out the parade route and viewing spots in advance.

On the job market front, we don't have any major hiring announcements to report today, but we do want to mention that the New York Jets have made some significant changes, with Joe Douglas stepping down as general manager following the team's 3-8 start.

In real estate news, a group of tenants in Lower Manhattan are claiming that their landlord is dodging repairs, with holes in the floor and a ceiling that droops. This is a concerning issue that we'll be keeping an eye on.

From city hall, we have an update on congestion pricing. The MTA announced that the Federal Highway Administration has given congestion pricing the green light, clearing the way for it to start on January 5, 2025. This is a significant development that will impact daily life for many commuters.

Weather-wise, we're expecting a significant change in the pattern today, with much-needed rain expected to hit the Tri-State Area late Wednesday. However, today is looking quite different, with a Red Alert in effect due to snow triggering winter weather alerts. Make sure to check the forecast before heading out.

In new business activity, we have a few updates to share. A new state-of-the-art trash system in NYCHA's Polo Grounds Towers in Harlem promises to tackle energy, rodent, and recycling issues. Additionally, families in Central Harlem will soon settle into their new homes at Marcus Garvey Village, which also brings free gathering spaces to the community and an LGBTQ center.

Looking ahead to community events, today is a big day for Thanksgiving celebrations. The New Rochelle Thanksgiving Parade kicks off at 10 am, featuring floats, giant parade balloons, marching bands, and more. We also have a Thanksgiving Eve celebration in the North Country, with live music from local country acts.

In local school achievements, we don't have any specific updates to share today, but we do want to mention that the 50th Annual Village Halloween Parade drew massive crowds, celebrating the theme "Upside/Down:Inside/OUT."

On a feel-good note, we want to highlight the community service of Ray Rice, who is being recognized as the Grand Marshal of the New Rochelle Thanksgiving Parade. Rice is known for his commitment to serving those in need, particularly young people, in both New Rochelle and Baltimore.

Finally, in today's crime report, we want to mention that police in New Jersey are trying to figure out where a drone seen over Chatham on Monday night came from. We also have a report of a 9/11 memorial being vandalized inside a church in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday.

This has been New York City Local Pulse. We'll see you tomorrow with more local updates.
