Crossed pulmonary arteries, a structural abnormality, and there was also a strong temporal relationship between the insertion of the longline and the collapse. The pathologist determined the cause of death as unascertained.

The following day, a mother diagnosed with a dangerous placenta condition delivered a baby boy weighing one pound, twelve ounces, just on the cusp of the weight limit for the unit to treat. Within four days, the baby developed severe pneumonia. Letby was not on duty in the intensive-care nursery where the baby was being cared for, but she entered the room to assist when the child's oxygen alarm sounded. Despite the efforts of the unit's staff, the baby could not be saved. A pathologist determined that the baby had died of natural causes.

Several days later, a woman arrived at the hospital after her water broke. She was sent home and instructed to wait. Over twenty-four hours later, she noticed reduced fetal movements. I was worried about infection because I hadn't received any antibiotics, she later stated.
