The resultant effects of drug epidemic are manifold: deteriorating health among youth, decreased educational attainment, deaths, increased crime rates, and economic burdens. It is no longer a surprise to see rising addiction rates and their devastating impact on communities and families.

In response, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA recently proposed implementing mandatory drug testing for tertiary education students as a measure to curb drug abuse.

However, many questions arise: How will the testing be conducted to ensure fairness and effectiveness? What measures will be put in place to support students who test positive? What are the potential consequences for students who fail the tests, and how will these impact their academic and future prospects?

Here, we took a look at these issues, examining the potential benefits and challenges of the proposed mandatory drug testing for students in tertiary institutions, and its implications for the future of Nigeria’s youth.
