Shaha Mfundishi Maasi developed an early interst in martial science in 1959 while serving in the USMC. In the early 60's he studied Kempo under Staff Sargeant Robert Holt, then in 1962 began study under legendary combat master James Cheatham in Newark, NJ. He opened his first school after the passing of Master Cheatham which he later closed to pursue studies under Dr.  U Maung Gyi, the father of Bando in America. Shaha Mfundishi Maasi was the first non Burmese person to attain the "3rd level of enlightnment" and the title of "Saya" (teacher) under Dr. Gyi. After his introduction to the Burmese Monk System of meditation & self defense, he attained the 4th level of achievement from the International and American Bando Association. Together with Nganga Mfundishi Tolo-Naa, the warrior style of Kupigana Ngumi was founded.  Mfundishi Tolo-Naa began martial arts at the age of 12, and has studied Jiujitsu, Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, Shaolin Kung Fu, Bando, Tai Chi, Hsing Yi, and Baguazhang. In the 1960's he founded the All African People's Art and Cultural Center, and in the 1980s founded the Maat Center for Martial Arts.
