Mpox, caused by the Orthopoxvirus, primarily manifests through flu-like symptoms and a distinctive rash. Although historically confined to central and west Africa, recent outbreaks just like in 2022 have seen a concerning rise in cases worldwide. Since the beginning of 2024, Africa has reported over 13,700 cases, with more than 450 deaths, particularly affecting countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, and Kenya.
In Nigeria, the situation has mirrored these global trends, with cases emerging in various states.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention last Thursday said the country has recorded a total of 39 confirmed cases of mpox and zero deaths across 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory from the beginning of 2024.
As the country grapples with the spread of mpox, it's crucial to understand the nature of this virus, its transmission, and the measures being taken to combat it.
Here, we took a look into the specifics of mpox, its symptoms, prevention strategies, and the latest updates on efforts to control its spread.
Our goal was to equip the audience with essential knowledge about Mpox—its symptoms, transmission, and preventive strategies, because as the saying goes, understanding and vigilance are our best defenses.
