‘My mother does not want me to study. She forces me to become a prostitute so that she can have rest.’ These were Nadima’s last words addressing Salem before she jumped to the street. She was born in the darkness of the medina. Alone, her mother resisted the pangs of parturition. She cried between life and death. Blood, sweat and tears sprang from her weak body. Her nearest neighbor came to her help. Since then, and taking her advice, she worked as a servant to satisfy her daughter’s growing demands. For the latter, childhood was a tough period. ‘Bread and water’ was the usual menu. What hurt her most was that the children around had fathers, who brought them beautiful things in the evening. She had to wait for Salem, who shared his sweets with her. He was the only one to treat her nicely. Her misfortune surpassed that of an orphan if it were not for this generous family in her neighborhood!
