Daniel Lovell, MD, MPH, Associate Director of the Division of Rheumatology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, gives an overview of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA).

As Dr. Lovell explains, JIA is an umbrella term for a number of diseases in individuals under the age of 16 and characterized by chronic arthritis that persists for at least 6 weeks. There are currently seven recognized subsets of JIA. These include: systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis, oligoarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (also known as oligoarthritis), rheumatoid factor positive polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (also known as polyarthritis, rheumatoid factor positive), rheumatoid factor negative polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (also known as polyarthritis, rheumatoid factor negative), psoriatic juvenile idiopathic arthritis, enthesitis-related juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and undifferentiated arthritis. All of these subtypes except systemic JIA are autoimmune conditions while systemic JIA is considered an autoinflammatory disease.
