After initially forming in 1989, Swedish rock outfit Nestor didn't actually release their first album until 2021 - some 32 years later!
While this may seem an unusually large time period between formation and debut album... well, what can you say? It is a bloody long time.
Nestor went into hibernation early on in their career, a promising career pushed to the side for various reasons that shall remain known only to the band members themselves. While showing glimpses of promise, they were never really a band that grew in popularity after their demise, so, when Nestor decided to reunite earlier this decade the announcement was met with little fanfare or expectation.
Which is probably a good thing because it allowed the members to settle back into things at their own pace and rediscover what it was about the band that ignited their passion so long ago.
After releasing their debut album Kids In A Ghost Town in 2021, Nestor attracted the interest of major labels and decided to sign with Napalm Records, who in turn decided to re-release the debut album as a deluxe edition with the addition of three new songs.
It proved to be a masterstroke to the point that Nestor have now exceeded even their own wildest comeback dreams, with plans afoot to take their music to a global audience.
HEAVY caught up with vocalist Tobias Gustavsson to talk about the remarkable journey of Nestor.
"It's been great," he enthused. "For us, we lived with this album for quite some time since we released it on our own last year but it's great to be able to do it full scale with a distribution partner that can get the album out there. It's also nice to be able to give the fans some additional extras in terms of three new songs."
With the band reaching even more markets with the re-release, HEAVY asks Tobias if the feedback is coming more from existing fans who may have upgraded to the deluxe version or from a completely new section of the market.
"I think so far since we have released it we have gotten quite a lot of new fans," he nodded. "We were able to reach different geographical areas with the new release, but last year when we released the album mainly in Scandanavia we got a lot of feedback and reviews from this part of the world but now, for the last weeks, you can really tell. There's a lot of people from South America, for example, that reviewed the album and have given us great feedback."
In the full interview, Tobias runs us through the three new tracks and why they were chosen, the album title and where it comes from, keeping the music on the album true to the original 80s style of the band, what changed to make Nestor reform, future music and its possible direction and more.
