Mental health issues affect us all and have an impact on all aspects of our lives, from our relationships, our workplaces, our living space, our justices systems, our communities. In this episode of Upstate Issues, Matthew Shapiro Associate Director, Public Affairs for the New York State chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) talks about key issues to make our communities a more mentally healthy place to live. Shapiro touches on resources NAMI offers which include classes taught by people with lived experience. He also talks about how people are processing the trauma and grief of the last year and challenges in accessing services, especially in rural areas. Mental health issues have also been a consideration in reforming policing and Shapiro talks about efforts to create Crisis Stabilization Centers.
