The rise in ritual killings in Nigeria has become a worrisome trend.

This gruesome practice has led to widespread fear and condemnation, particularly in regions where it is more prevalent.

Recently, the Yoruba elders, under the banner of the Kaaro Oojiire ÌmÍ Oodua Foundation (KOOOF), expressed deep concern over the rising cases of ritual killings in the South West. They lamented the erosion of moral values and the threat these acts pose to societal peace and security.

Indeed, the elders' concerns are well-founded. A content analysis of news reports shows a persistent occurrence of ritual killings not just in the south west but across the country, from the infamous Otokoto saga of 1996 and the chilling revelations of the Okija shrine, to more recent cases that continue to shock the nation.

In 2024 alone, there were several reported cases of ritual killings, each more horrifying than the last. For example, in Ogun State, a teenager was caught with a fresh human head, confessing that it was meant for a ritual to secure wealth. In another horrifying incident in Osun State, a pastor and an herbalist were arrested for conspiring to murder a woman for ritual purposes. Also a group of boys in Ogun State killed one of their girlfriends, intending to use her body parts for a ritual to gain wealth. These are just a few of the many cases across the country.

But why do we still have such practices even in today's modern society? What are the truths and myths behind ritual killings? Do people really gain wealth and power through these means, or is it a figment of some people's imagination?
