Notably, the team achieved second-place finishes in both 2010 and 2011, marking the highest placements ever attained by an Ivy League school in the tournament. During the 2011 season, Cornell held the number one ranking for a significant portion of the year but faced a tough challenge in the NCAA tournament, where they were defeated by Penn State, a program that was on the rise under the guidance of Coach Cael Sanderson.
Throughout his coaching career, Koll has nurtured numerous NCAA champions, including Yianni Diakomihalis (2018, 141 lbs), Gabe Dean (2015 and 2016, 184 lbs), Nahshon Garrett (2016, 133 lbs), and Kyle Dake, who achieved an extraordinary four titles across different weight classes (2010, 141 lbs; 2011, 149 lbs; 2012, 157 lbs; and 2013, 165 lbs). Other champions include Steve Bosak (2012, 184 lbs), Cam Simaz (2012, 197 lbs), Troy Nickerson (2009, 125 lbs), Jordan Leen (2008, 157 lbs), Travis Lee (2003, 125 lbs; 2005, 133 lbs), and David Hirsch (1994, 126 lbs). Koll's exceptional coaching abilities have earned him multiple accolades, including Ivy League Coach of the Year honors in 2015, 2016, and 2017, as well as EIWA Coach of the Year in 2007, 2010, 2011, and 2017. He was also recognized as the NWCA National Coach of the Year in 2005.
Before coaching, Koll had a stellar athletic career. He was a four-time All-American at the University of North Carolina and a three-time Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Champion. His crowning achievement as a competitor came in 1988 when he won the NCAA Championship at 158 lbs. On the international stage, Koll's prowess continued as he claimed the Pan-Am Games title in 1989, was a two-time US Champion in 1990 and 1991, and finished fifth at the 1991 World Championships.
