Described by one guest as “Flint’s best day”, the last Saturday in August means it’s the Crim Festival of Races, and this year the 10-mile start line is brought to...
show moreWe start off the show with Rafael Turner, Consumers Energy Community Affairs Manager for Genesee, Saginaw, and Shiawassee counties. Consumers is excited to be this year’s 10-mile race start line sponsor, and proud to be involved on many levels for this important community event. Rafael not only shares the role that CE plays on August 25 but also throughout the year. He’s a Flintstone, born and raised, so he’s got tons of insider tips for the Crim races, as well as where to get a great coney.
Brandon Morgan joins in, he’s the Director of External Relations for the Crim Fitness Foundation. He explained that “once people learn about the race” they get introduced to all of the good that the Crim Foundation does year-round in Flint. From mindfulness training, to making sure school walking routes are safe, to encouraging healthy, active lifestyles, the Crim Foundation, with help from partners like Consumers Energy, serves the community as a whole to the tune of millions of dollars a year.
You don’t have to be a runner to come and enjoy the Crim, there are tons of events leading up to the races, and Saturday always turns out to be quite the community party. Brandon shares some of his favorite places to set up and watch the races, plus many of the fun activities that will be open to all during this weekend's event, which is expected to draw upwards of 50,000 people.
We set up our mobile recording unit at one of our top coney spots in the state, the Starlite Diner 2. Starlite Diner 1 is probably the place most people recall, it’s a classic-looking diner in Flint. The #2 location is located just on the outskirts of town, with a little bit different feel, but all of your favorites on the menu, including Flint-style coney dogs. Owner Jason Hester comes by to explain what makes it Flint-style, how they’ve been slinging them for over 50 years, and what makes Flint such a great place to be.
