In a previous episode, Locke argued that in a pre-political "state of nature," everyone has "perfect freedom." In this episode, Locke adds the proviso that it is always a violation of natural law for persons to enslave themselves, even if doingl this would bring about some greater good for the slave or for others (for example, for a family member). Locke uses the words "natural liberty of man" and "freedom of nature" when telling his readers about the content of the state of nature. He cautions us not to confuse natural liberty with civil or political liberty.
