Sleep disorders are a common problem. There are many different types of sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, sleepwalking, narcolepsy, insomnia, restless leg syndrome, and sleep hygiene. Sleep disorders can have a significant impact on your health and well-being.
Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that causes pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep. These pauses can last for a few seconds to minutes and can happen dozens of times an hour. As a result, you may not get enough oxygen and can wake up feeling tired or unrefreshed. Sleep apnea can also put you at risk for high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, and other health problems.
Sleepwalking is a sleep disorder that causes you to walk or do other activities while you are asleep. Sleepwalking typically happens during the deepest stage of sleep (known as slow-wave sleep) and usually occurs in the first few hours after falling asleep. Most people with this condition do not remember sleepwalking. Sleepwalking can be dangerous if you walk into traffic or do something else that could harm yourself or others.
Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder that causes you to fall asleep suddenly, even when you are in the middle of a conversation or activity. This happens because you cannot control when you fall asleep. The most common symptoms of narcolepsy are excessive daytime sleepiness and sudden attacks of sleep. Narcolepsy can also cause problems with thinking, movement, and emotions.
Insomnia is a sleep disorder that causes you to have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or getting enough sleep. Symptoms of insomnia can include difficulty falling asleep, waking up frequently during the night, waking up early in the morning, feeling tired during the day, or taking a long time to fall back asleep. Insomnia can be caused by stress, anxiety, depression, and other medical conditions.
Restless leg syndrome is a sleep disorder that causes you to have an irresistible urge to move your legs. This urge is usually accompanied by an unpleasant sensation (such as tingling, burning, or itching). Restless leg syndrome typically happens when you are at rest or lying down. This can make it difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep. The cause of restless leg syndrome is unknown, but it may be linked to iron deficiency, pregnancy, diabetes, and other health problems.
Sleep hygiene is the practice of taking steps to improve your sleep. Sleep hygiene includes following a regular sleep schedule, avoiding caffeine and alcohol before bed, reserving the bed for sleep and sex, and using relaxation techniques to help you fall asleep. Poor sleep hygiene can lead to problems such as insomnia and restless leg syndrome. Improving your sleep hygiene can help you get the rest you need to feel alert and productive during the day.
