Horace Smith, Michigan State University Professor Emeritus of Astronomy and Physics, returns to Talking Weird!

He discusses his latest book THE GREAT METEOR PROCESSION:

"On the evening of February 9, 1913, a dazzling stream of fireballs astonished onlookers from the cold prairies of Canada to the tropical South Atlantic Ocean. This book follows the century-long effort to understand the nature of this Great Meteor Procession. Satellites, saints, scientists, spaceships, and space rocks enter the tale as the story unfolds. Related phenomena, including the great fireballs of 1783 and 1860, bring the 1913 event into context, and introduce Walt Whitman's poetry to the story."

Professor Smith also chats with Dean about UFOs, haunted observatories, the Northern Lights, and the works of Charles Fort!

This is a thought-provoking episode, and one that you don't want to miss!

As I said below, I came upon this topic when researching Mebane, only to learn he wrote a 16 page scientific article "Observations of the Great Fireball Procession of 1913 February 9, by Mebane, A. D.; Journal: Meteoritics, volume 1, number 4, page 405. He did tireless work on this event. It's recommended reading! It's in the NASA series at Harvard, and you can read it for free!: https://articles.adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-iarticle_query?bibcode=1956Metic...1..405M&db_key=AST&page_ind=0&data_type=GIF&type=SCREEN_VIEW&classic=YES

Glad to hear you discussing Alexander Mebane, which is how I just tonight learned about the 1913 Great Fireball Procession, and then found your (Prof. Smith's) podcast. I'm working on a findagrave memorial for him, putting together his bio. I just finished one for the CSI female cofounder you couldn't recall: Isabel Lenore Davis. I did tons of research on her and you may find this of interest: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/255307858/isabel-lenore-davis
