show moreFirst they released a cover of Ozzy Osbourne's classic song Mama I'm Coming Home and they followed that by putting out a deluxe version of last years smash album Dear Monsters which included that cover plus some B side's and acoustic versions of existing songs.
The original Dear Monsters saw Bad Wolves welcome new vocalist Daniel 'DL' Laskiewicz who has since gone on to make the role his own in emphatic fashion. He excells on Mama I'm Coming Home, in the process stamping his authority as Bad Wolves frontman.
Guitarist Doc Coyle joined HEAVY to discuss both releases.
We start by asking how the early reception has been for a song that means so much to so many people.
"Actually really great," he offered, trying not to sound surprised. "It's always a little bit scary when you cover a classically renowned piece of material. It's one of my favourite songs - I'm a huge Ozzy fan. No More Tears was just like, you know, I listen to that album on repeat but I thought it was the kind of song, especially with DL's vocals. Especially doing a cover, it's gotta fit the sound of the band. So we threw it out there and said how is this going to go and we recorded that whole thing while we were on tour. On the last tour we would set up a recording rig in hotel rooms and we worked out the instrumental and vocals, so considering how we did it is more impressive. It seems like people are really enjoying it."
In the full interview, Doc talks about keeping the structure of a cover song the same while still adding Bad Wolves originality, why they chose an Ozzy song, the performance of DL on the track, how he has grown into his role as frontman, learning to gel with a new band member, the extras on the deluxe version of Dear Monsters and more.
