In this episode of "Great Battles," we explore the Battle of Cannae, fought on August 2, 216 BCE, during the Second Punic War. Hannibal Barca, the Carthaginian general, faced a much larger Roman force led by consuls Lucius Aemilius Paullus and Gaius Terentius Varro. Hannibal employed a brilliant strategy, using a crescent-shaped formation to envelop the Roman legions, resulting in a devastating defeat for Rome. The battle is renowned for Hannibal's tactical genius and remains a classic case study in military strategy. Despite the massive Roman losses, the battle forced Rome to adapt and eventually led to their victory in the war.
